ArmorOfGodEach and every time a major disaster takes place there appears to be 2 immediate reactions: 1) blaming God; and 2) turning to God.

Questions are suddenly being asked: “Why does God allow such things to take place … why doesn’t God step in … why doesn’t God put an end to this … why did it have to be these people … why at this time …”

These are certainly difficult questions to answer in some ways.  But at the same time, the simple answer is “sin.”  When sin entered this world so did death.  One does not need to read far in Genesis to see how it raised it’s ugly head … when Adam and Eve’s family are immediately touched when one son (Cain) kills his own brother (Abel).

The mayor of the small town in Connecticut was right when he said, “today evil visited our town.”  Sadly, no town is exempt from this visit … indeed evil lives in every place.  But rarely do we place the blame where it belongs … on Satan and his minions … and those who follow.

We blame others … we blame guns … we blame illness … we blame over and under medicated people … we blame drugs … we blame schools … we blame the government for taking prayer out of schools … we blame everything and everyone … but we fail to blame Satan and the sin he drug into this world through Adam and Eve.  We fail to lay blame on those of us who choose to follow paths of sin … and who so often stand idly by as evil marches ever forward … trampling Christian principles in their path.

But then … when evil strikes in mass (or even smaller) fashion … we suddenly turn back to God.  We gather for our candle-light vigils … we come back to church … we make bargains with God … we begin to pray … we hug our children … all good things.  But are these lasting changes?

Are we willing to start taking some hard stands against the easy wrongs.  Are we willing to start in our own lives … in our own homes … in our own churches … standing against the evils that we have allowed to be perpetrated in our midst in the name of tolerance and fair-mindedness or progress?  Or will we just drift back to where we were before this current tragedy took place … waiting to do it all over again?

In my lifetime I have seen tragedies of all kinds … and I have seen the church pews fill in reaction … and then seen people drift away after time … leaving God behind once again … until the next tragedy or disaster.

If it is true that the only real thing we can blame is sin … then there is only one real thing we can turn to …and that is Jesus!  I know of no other religion in the world that promises to bring forgiveness of sin and life and salvation.  I know of no other person who is able to transform minds.  I know of no other person who is capable of making all things right … and working all things for good.  And his name is Jesus!

Until we reclaim what is written in His Word … and obey the precepts He has laid out … starting with ourselves … and then in our families … and in our churches … and in our communities … and in our schools … and in our states and country … and its government … we will only repeat what we have done so many times …

The Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

It is time for God’s people … to know the foe … and strap on the whole armor of God and leave it on …
