Augustine—a great Christian thinker—when Rome had been sacked said, “All earthly cities are vulnerable.  Men build them; men destroy them.  At the same time, there is the city of God that men did not build & cannot destroy & which is everlasting.”

This is why—as the body of Christ—we need to be reminded of something that is not going to change.

  • We are in the business of the gospel.
  • We are in the business of being the church.
  • We are in the business of proclaiming the good news of life in the kingdom of God.
  • We are in the business of proclaiming Jesus, our matchless teacher, crucified & Risen Lord & we will not deviate from this, and;
  • We will not be distracted or be turned aside from this & we do it with no apologies, hesitations & no second thoughts.

Chuck Colson, who had some experience in this sphere says, “The kingdom of God is not going to arrive on Air Force 1.”

So—the first thing to remember is that God’s purpose of salvation is not to be identified with any country’s well-being … or for who its leader is.  God’s plan for the world; the hope of the world is the church.  And a real practical thing for us just to be clear on: we’re in the business of the gospel & of being a church.
